Portsmouth’s railroad tracks run downtown from Islington Street, across Market Street and along the Piscataqua River all the way to Atlantic Heights and further on towards Public Service of New Hampshire’s power station (which can be seen generating a plume of smoke in the distance). The fresh snowfall, the blue sky that finally made its way out, and the cargo car made for a cool shot.

The power plant is located on the banks of the Piscataqua River and can also be seen in THIS POST from the summer, I highly suggest you check it out.

Even cooler will be the navigation around the site for images rather than getting redirected to different sites. Hopefully it will make for a better viewing experience for everyone! Feedback is greatly appreciated.

Portsmouth’s historical fabric is pretty evident all around the city, its streets and its buildings. Today’s post features two brick walls in the city, both belonging to buildings that are more than 100 years old. I love the richness of the character of the buildings in town, many have been painted, advertised on, cleaned, repointed, etc.

In the comments – take your best guess at which buildings these are and/or where they’re located.

Also, check out another self portrait below then head over to The Beer Drinking Report for a post about Bella Sol, the new restaurant seen below that looks set to open now that the wraps are off the windows.

Today’s shots feature Strawbery Banke with some freshly fallen snow. Above is a panoramic shot of the museum campus and the former Puddle Dock neighborhood with the North Church visible in the background. Below is another shot from my trip to Fort Constitution, where you can see just how cold the Fort’s stone wall is with the ice built up from the snow and sea spray. View on large for a nice crisp shot of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (you can even see Whaleback Light in the distance). The fresh snow definitely made for a lovely walk on Monday afternoon.

With the arrival of the snowstorm this weekend, I had the unique opportunity to go adventuring around the seacoast (since the storm kept me from traveling)…and though it wasn’t really all that adventurous, I did have to sort of sneak around Fort Constitution to try and get some better shots of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in the snow, as it’s a scene I’ve wanted to capture. (They don’t let you over near the actual lighthouse during the offseason, which I didn’t know until I arrived, so I tried to climb whatever I could or sneak through the little holes in the wall to get a better glimpse.)

I’ll have a few more of the lighthouse in the gallery in the coming days, and more shots from the rest of the day around New Castle and downtown. Snapped more construction shots too of the Residence Inn, which is now adorned with brick, and also some of the former Portsmouth Herald building – as always, stay tuned for more. (And don’t forget to click the images for larger views!)

I wanted to share with everyone a taste of the video footage that I’ve shot over the previous year during my voyages around town (be sure to view fullscreen in HD). This is all footage shot with my Canon 5d Mark II camera, which I’ve had for just under a year, and is capable of HD video…but unfortunately I’m still learning and don’t really know what I’m doing beyond the still shots. I had fun compiling the footage, which has been set to Vampire Weekend’s song “Run” from their new album Contra. Please drop a note and let me know your thoughts!

Today’s shots are a pair of sunrises from my stairwell in Atlantic Heights – the first shot (above) with an intense red glow and another more subtle, yet beautiful morning. I-95 can be seen in the distance.

Here’s a third shot from after the snow storm on January 18th once the sun made an appearance and the snow was still sticking to the trees.

I took advantage of the warmer weather we had today and went for a stroll. I hate to bore people with the same spots over and over, but I find myself drawn to the same places – and with another newly arrived freighter (the Atlantic Cozumel from Panama) and perfect conditions, snapped the shot above (and updated the header). Below is another artistic take on the Martingale Wharf project.

Check back again in coming days, I’m working on putting together a video compilation of various scenes that I’ve shot with the camera throughout the year. It’s been fun to put together, and I think you’ll like it.

I’m also exploring the possibility of having some work displayed at the newly opened gallery at 220 State Street – the Portsmouth Art Exchange. I met Jane Sewell this afternoon and had a lovely chat with her, go visit the store and say hello (and stay tuned, if everything comes together there will be an opening where I’d love to meet everyone!).

UPDATED: DUE TO THE CURRENT WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE CONCERT SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY NIGHT (JAN. 18TH) AT 8PM HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL MONDAY FEBRUARY 1ST AT 8PM.

The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra will be hosting a silent vigil and Benefit Concert on Monday January 18th, 2010 at the North Church (2 Congress Street, Portsmouth, NH). ADDITIONAL DETAILS HERE

I’m sure that everyone has heard news of the tragic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday earlier this week. With the quake being the worst that the struggling country has seen in 200 years, and as many as 50,000 feared dead, Americans have come together to raise funds to support the relief efforts to minimize the continued loss of life and aid the recovery of the island country.

The silent vigil will begin at 7:30pm with the concert to begin at 8pm. Donations will be accepted for admission, with all proceeds to benefit the Haiti relief work through the American Red Cross. Please follow the PSO’s lead and help with the relief efforts, let’s bring a ray of light to the situation (and enjoy some great music in the process).
